Logitech has launched a new speaker aimed at the iPad market, but instead of featuring Apple AirPlay they have gone with bluetooth technology for streaming audio from the iPad to the Logitech Wireless Boombox.
While many competitors are launching AirPlay speakers, Logitech have chosen to go down the bluetooth route, which also means that they can offer their Wireless Boombox at a much lower price than if it featured AirPlay technology, which has turned out to be quite expensive to include in sound systems (licensing rights and all that). The idea is that for most people the difference in sound quality on a system like this will not be noticeable.
The Logitech Wireless Boombox for iPad is compact, portable (rechargeable battery), and has decent specifications. Inside the slim peanut shaped speaker you will find two 3-inch laser-tuned mid-range neodymium drivers, two 1/2-inch tweeters, and four passive 2-inch radiators to provide a deeper bass sound. Streaming audio is done using bluetooth A2DP audio profile, so while it supports streaming from an iPad, it also supports streaming from any other bluetooth enabled media device, making the system a viable option for the non-Apple device owners out there as well. For those without bluetooth media devices the Logitech Wireless Boombox also features 3.5mm aux jack for connecting pretty much any audio source, although not sure why anyone would get a wireless speaker if their device did not support streaming.
We hope to be able to test and review the Logitech Wireless Boombox in the near future.
