Tesco challenging O2 and Orange as iPhone goes on sale 14th December

Tesco Mobile has announced the release of the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS on their network for Monday 14th December, bringing a new competitor into the market just before Christmas, offering amongst other Tesco Clubcard points on both buying the iPhone and the spend on pay-as-you-go or monthly bill.

It is a few weeks back since we first heard of the supermarket giant Tesco starting to sell the iPhone through their mobile network, and now that the price plans have been released it is interesting to see that they are doing things a bit different than O2 and Orange in terms of contracts and prices.

One of the key differentiators might just be the fact that they are offering Clubcard points on both the purchase of the iPhone itself as well as your spend using it, giving double clubcard points for the purchase, and tripple points for every £1 spend on top-up or monthly bill.

Like the other networks they are offering 12 months of free Web & WiFi on pay-as-you-go, but they are also offering up to 24 months of free Web&WiFi depending on the contract length.

In terms of pricing the deals vary, but if you are after the 32gb iPhone 3GS on a £20 per month contract over 12 months you will have to shell out £407 for the iPhone itself. If you then stick with the monthly allowance you are looking at a total cost over the 12 months of £647. Comparing that with an Orange contract over 18 months at £29 per month, paying £274 for the iPhone itself, it will take the total to £626, slightly lower than with TescoMobile, but with an additional 6 months on the contract. The contracts themselves are a bit different as well, with TescoMobile offering a £60 allowance across calls and text, while the package referred to on Orange includes 150 minutes and 250 text.
