It was always expected that the 3rd generation iPod Touch would be high up on peoples Christmas wishlist this year, which was supported by reports in the days leading up to Christmas showing searches for the iPod Touch being among the most popular. Now reports are coming in that it has been a stellar Christmas for the iPod Touch, showing massive increases in application downloads from the device.
Early December product searches are usually a good indication as to what people will be buying as gifts for Christmas, and this year saw product searches for the Apple iPhone and the iPod Touch lead the way ahead of the many popular gaming platforms, including the Xbox and the Wii.
With Christmas presents now being shared out and unwrapped, we are starting to see people using their new devices. Data released following boxing day by analytics company Flurry Analytics shows downloads from the iPod Touch increasing up to 1000% on Christmas Day, a good indication that there has been plenty iPod Touch’es unwrapped on Christmas Day morning.
Information from their report indicates amongst other that iTunes App Store downloads from the iPod Touch for the first time eclipsed that of the iPhone, by an impressive 172%. It also shows that downloads from the iPod Touch 3G increased by 900% compared to an average for a Friday for the rest of the year.
This is very clear information supporting the success for Apple this Christmas and for their 3rd generation iPod Touch, which to be fair received a bit of criticism when launched as it did not feature the much expected integrated camera. Recent reports indicate that the 3rd gen iPod Touch could get camera early 2010.
We will come back with more information on this as Apple releases updated sales figures.
