Sony is joining the Apple Airplay speaker race with their new, and might i say fairly stylish looking, Sony SA-NS510 Portable Homeshare Speaker.
Sony is already well established and popular in the iPod speaker dock market, so it comes as no surprise that they are finally getting into the Apple AirPlay game as well. In fact i was expecting Sony to embrace AirPlay earlier than this, but i guess one can never wait too long for something good, so let’s hope it is really good.
Based on the images available of the Sony SA-NS510 so far it reminds me slightly of a 70′s style retro table top lamp, and i kind of like it. It is small and portable, but on the inside you will find four drivers and a subwoofer that together delivers 360-degree portable sound, thanks to the built-in rechargeable battery that provides up to 5-6 hours of playback. In addition to Apple AirPlay streaming it looks like it also supports DLNA, which is good news for all those that are not a complete Apple family.
Thisismynext have had a chance to play around with the prototype, that will be released in October, and a reporting a surprisingly full and loud sound. Given the size and portability it is likely that the Sony SA-NS510 will go head to head with iHome iW1 as well as the newly announced AQ Smart Airplay speaker, which is priced even lower at £199. It is however not that much further up to the likes of the coming Libratone Live for those that are after stylish designer speakers.
