Sky News is today following in the footsteps of NewsCorp by launching their very own dedicated news app for the iPad, which for a limited period at least will be free to download.
Early reports are that the Sky News app is well received as a fresh and innovative approach to delivering the latest news to news hungry iPad owners. The news apps focuses on a few key stories not to spread itself to thin, and live video is centerstage.
According to reports from amongst other Techradar, Sky News have decided that the new iPad app should only work when the user is online, and that eventually it will become a paid-for app for users that are not already Sky customers. It does make sense for Sky to make the access to the app on a paid for basis in the future, although it will be interesting to see how they manage the process in terms of making the app paid for through iTunes, in which case how do you differ between Sky customers and non-Sky customers? or if they make the app free to download and then charge in-app for non-Sky customers, in which case they might get affected by the new iTunes in-app purchase fees.
Unlike its Sky News app already available, the iPad app is focused around video and visual presentation of news stories through graphs and images as well as text.
The Sky News iPad is compatible with both the original iPad as well as the iPad 2 as longs as it is running iOS 4.2 or later.
Download the new Sky News iPad app for free from iTunes App Store today.
