Pioneer have truly embraced wireless streaming with their new XW-SMA3 portable speaker, packing it with not only Airplay, but also DLNA, HTC Connect, and Wireless Direct, bypassing the need for having a home network available, taking the XW-SMA3 truly wireless and portable.
The design of the speaker is simple enough to look at, reminding me a bit of the Sonos Play3 amongst other. Available in black or white, the SMA3 comes with a scratch resistant finish and covered port design, allowing it to handle even more rugged outdoors use. The Wireless Direct technology, along with the built in rechargeable battery, also helps ensure that you can get a good few hours of playtime out in the garden or perhaps by the pool.
With so many streaming options, the SMA3 caters for most smartphones and portable media players these days. AirPlay ensures easy streaming from Apple devices, while HTC Connect makes it easy to stream from compatible HTC smartphones. DLNA is also included, allowing access to networked devices and streaming from amongst other many Android based devices. At the back of the unit you will also find wired options, including AUX input, Ethernet port, and USB charging port for Apple devices.
On the inside the Pioneer XW-SMA3 features professionally tuned dual 77mm woofers and a 20mm tweeter, offering up a total power output of 20W. If you have more than one speaker in the SMA –range you can also create a multiroom system out of it.
I hope to be back with a hands on review in the near future.
