Philips Fidelio P9 Wireless Portable Speaker Review

Philips Fidelio P9 bluetooth wireless speaker

More recently Philips have focused on wireless solutions and Bluetooth streaming for their Fidelio range, which already includes a good selection of AirPlay speakers. While there’s a good selection of new bluetooth speakers, one should not overlook the ones that have been out for while already, such as the portable Philips Fidelio P9 with its plush leather protective cover.

Overview

With the Fidelio P9 it looks like Philips have taken a page out of the Bose design book, as the P9 looks very similar to the Bose Soundlink bluetooth, and that is not a bad thing. Using a combination of wood, aluminum, and leather gives the P9 that extra quality feel that you want from a speaker this price. The leather protective cover also doubles as a stand, allowing you to angle the speaker to your preference.

The audio set up of the Fidelio P9 includes a set of four 2-inch woofers, dual 3/4-inch soft dome tweeters, and dual rear firing passive radiators, providing a total of 20W power output. The woofers performance are boosted by wOOx technology. The rechargeable battery provides up to 8 hours of playtime, and should you need to charge your smartphone or tablet, you can connect to the speakers USB port. There is also a 3.5mm line-in.

Review

What I have always enjoyed about the Philips Fidelio range of products are their understated classic and elegant design, and that is also true for the Fidelio P9. It’s a portable speaker that fits into most settings around the home or out and about. Control buttons are easily accessible at the top of the unit, the front is all aluminum grill, and the leather cover/stand gives it that extra little finesse and functionality (close it up and the speaker powers down to save battery).

Like most wireless speakers this size, it has its limitations in the audio department in terms of clear separation etc. but what it does well is deliver, in a lack of better terms, an enjoyable soundstage. The vocals and mids are clear, the lows are present but not dominating, and it all comes across as well balanced allowing you to enjoy the music even when the speaker is cranked up, and it can go quite loud.

Positives

  • Warm and well balanced soundstage
  • Clear mids and vocals with supportive low end
  • Compact and understated classic design
  • At current prices, very good value for money

Negatives

  • There’s not much negative to say about the Fidelio P9 besides that the battery time could be a bit better

Review summary

The Philips Fidelio P9 is still amongst the best portable wireless speakers in its category, delivering a warm and well balanced sound experience. With the deals available recently on the Fidelio P9, this is an absolute steal of a wireless speaker!
