The high-end iPod speaker dock market does not get much more high-end than the Parrot by Philippe Starck Zikmu wireless speakers.
The Philippe Starck Zikmu wireless speakers are said to be “a daring blend of design and acoustics” and they definitely look different from any iPod speaker dock i have seen before, and after seeing display models in different ‘natural’ settings, they do look great, but does the sound warrant the price tag?
Designed to bring a 360-degree sound experience from the two speaker units that connect with each other wirelessly, combined providing a total power output of 100W RMS (50W per channel amplifier) from your digital music source. You can dock your iPod/iPhone at the top of one of the units, or stream wirelessly over wi-fi or bluetooth (A2DP) from your compatible digital music source. These speakers came onto the market before Apple launched their new Apple AirPlay streaming technology, so unlike some other high-end systems, including the Libratone Lounge, this is not an AirPlay speaker.
Having not had a chance to test the Parrot Philippe Starck Zikmu speakers myself, only having briefly listened to them in a retail setting, i can’t rate the sound performance of the speakers yet. As for first impression, sound was good, but i was still left with a feeling that you can get equally or better sound from a lot less expensive systems, including the stylish B&W Zeppelin Air.
You can watch a video of the system here.
