I have to admit that I have been a fan of Libratone ever since their first wireless speaker came onto the market a couple of years back. Their great design and quality has made them stand out in a crowded market, but for many average Apple owners the price might have stopped many of us from buying a Libratone AirPlay speaker. This could be about to change with the new Libratone ZIPP.
The Libratone ZIPP is smaller than their earlier AirPlay speakers, and it comes with a rechargeable battery, making it portable. But it is not only the battery that makes the ZIPP a more portable alternative. Libratone have added PlayDirect technology in the ZIPP, so there is no longer any need to be connected to a wireless network to stream your music from your iOS / iTunes device. This is what AirPlay should have been like all along; as easy to use as bluetooth but with better quality stream.
Standing about a foot tall, the cylindrical ZIPP packs 60W of power output, with a 4″ bass and two ribbon tweeters, so should be plenty for most group settings, whether indoor or outdoor. It comes with the same Libratone 360-degree patented FullRoom sound technology, and supports multiroom set up, should you choose to buy more than one of these bad boys. Playtime on battery power is said to be 4-hours over wireless, or 8-hours if you use a wired connection.
Unlike so many other sound systems for Apple products out there, Libratone has also understood that the customers have individual taste, hence you can get different color italian wool covers for the ZIPP, making the unit really stand out. Simply zipp up its jacket and you are good to go!
I hope to be back with a hands-on review of the Libratone ZIPP in the near future to report on experienced audio performance.
