iTunes App Store hits a billion downloads + top 20 apps in history
By admin • Apr 11th, 2009 • Category: Lead Story, Third party applicationsTo say that the the iTunes App Store has been a huge success would be an understatement as Apple on the 23rd of April reached a 1 billion downloaded applications with a pace that is the envy of most other companies out there. To celebrate the significant event Apple put up a page that showed the live count towards the 1 billionth download, where you can soon also see who is the contest winners.
It is just past midnight here in the UK as i checked in on the Apple countdown page and could see that the milestone was now reached, and it would have happened within the last couple of hours as when i checked in earlier this evening it was still about 25,000 to go. It is very impressive indeed.
To celebrate the milestone accomplishment Apple had invited everyone to download an application to automatically get a chance to win a $10,000 iTunes gift card, an iPod Touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. Not a bad price to win and the winner will be announced in the near future.
At the same time Apple has also revealed the top 20 downloaded applications in the build up to the 1 billion download, which includes classics such as:
- Google Earth
- iPint
- Mac Man lite
- Moto chaser
- Virtual pool
- Cro-Mag rally
- Touch hockey
- Flick Fishing
- Monopoly
- Flashlight
- Shazam
- Pocket God
- iCopter
- Pocketguitar
- Super Monkey ball
- Remote
- Darts
- Ebay
- Tetris
- Texas hold’em
- And more….
Althought it would be a stretch to claim that all these apps are useful, they are without a doubt entertaining (and in many cases free!) which has made millions of people download them.
Once again, congratulations to Apple on the this massive milestone and the success of the iTunes App Store.
