Jawbone could arguably be given the title as the company to make the portable bluetooth speaker a must-have accessory, thanks to their Jambox speaker. Since the launch of the original, they have given us the larger Big Jambox, and now they have gone the opposite direction, delivering a swank new Mini Jambox.
The Mini Jambox is a new take on the original, easily recognizable in design, but Jawbone has been to trim it down to about half the thickness and weight, while maintaining what is described as the same sound performance. The anodized aluminium casing has rubber edges that goes through to the bottom to provide a non-slip function, available in 9 different colours and with 5 different shaped front grills. Designed to fit in your pocket, even pants pocket, the Mini Jambox can best be described as an ultra portable speaker solution with an edge.
Ultimately, portable speakers like the Mini Jambox need to provide a better audio experience than the smartphone/tablet itself to justify the price, and of course have a decent battery life. The Mini Jambox is said to provide up to 10 hours play time, which is decent for its size. It uses Bluetooth 4.0, which is more energy efficient, plus it allows you to have two simultaneously connections at a time.
For its size, Jawbone has been able to cram in dual drivers and a passive bass radiator in the small Mini Jambox frame. Independent reports indicate that the audio performance is slightly better than the original (perhaps not quite as loud), but competition in this market is though from the likes of Bose Soundlink Mini, Beats by Dre Pill, and more, so we will await judgment on sound performance and ‘bang for you buck’ until we have had a chance to play with it.
The Jawbone Mini Jambox is now available from amongst other Jawbone direct for $180.
