Sonos S5 - The iPod sound system without the iPod dock

By admin • Oct 20th, 2009 • Category: iPod Speaker Docks

The Sonos S5 is not your average iPod Sound System, in fact it is not made for the iPod or iPhone at all, and Sonos is not know as a speaker producer, but the Sonos S5 comes with great expectations as its US launch is next week, with Europe launch set for 10th November.

Sonos S5 Zoneplayer wireless sound system

Sonos is not a speaker producer, but rather one of the best known producers of wireless audio solutions of high quality for every room in the house.  The Sonos S5 brings that knowledge and quality into a single sound system which combined with the Sonos app for the iPhone and iPod Touch turns your device into a remote control for the Sonos S5.

As said, the Sonos S5 is not an iPod or iPhone speaker dock, but rather a home sound system that can take the music from several different sources, wirelessly. The Sonos S5 can source music from your iTunes library as well as from, line-in connected devices, free internet radio stations, and the likes of Last.fm. It then send the music to any Sonos zone  in your house, including the Sonos S5.

Now it is expected that the Sonos S5 will take on the higher end iPod speaker docks, such as the B&W Zeppelin and Focal XS amongst others, units priced at around £350-400, and the Sonos Zoneplayer S5 is expected to retail at around the same price in the UK as well. In fact, a quick search on Google finds it listed at £349.

Now, we have not had a chance yet to listen to the performance of the Sonos S5, but based on early reports it is competitive both on price and quality of sound with the other high quality iPod sound systems in the market. The Sonos S5 comes packed with 5 speakers, including two tweeters, two 3inch mids, and a 3.5inch sub, and 5 dedicated amps to run the show, so the sound should be of a good quality.

We will return with more information once we have had a chance to get hands on with the Sonos S5.
