The ultimate guide to the last month of the iPod
By admin • Sep 15th, 2008 • Category: Apple iPodUnless you have been hiding in a cave somewhere or been stranded on a deserted island for the last few months, it has been hard to miss all the rumors and news around the iPod that culminated with the launch of the new generation iPods about a week ago.
In case you are trying to catch up with everything that has happened in the world of Apple and the iPod for the last month or two, we have decided to provide a summary of our coverage of the new iPod generation, from rumor to launch.
The iPod rumors
Guess the rumors about what would happen with the iPod started around the same time as it became clear that Apple was launching their new 3G iPhone into the global market, and in the beginning most rumors were f0cused on what the next generation iPod Touch would be like, which then was quickly followed by rumors and leaked images of a new back to the future looking iPod Nano. Every day there would be new rumors about what Apple would do with their iPod range next.
The 2nd generation iPod Touch
It has pretty much been clear that Apple would upgrade the iPod Touch from the day that the new 3g iPhone was launched, but exactly what the new iPod Touch would include was up for discussion. Most people, including ourselves, figured that it would include an upgrade to 64gb iPod Touch, which we now know did not happen. Others were discussing whether or not it would feature map functionality like on the iPhone. When it came to the launch of the new 2nd generation iPod Touch it turned out to be only slight modifications that included a brushed up design to make it more in line with the iPhone, and an upgrade of the software, and the integration of Nike+ functionality. Most experts were also expecting a price drop on the iPod Touch, which has happened, although perhaps not as much as we were hoping for. You can compare and find best price on 2nd gen iPod Touch here. Overall the market seems very happy with the new 2nd generation iPod Touch as it has taken small steps in the right direction.
The 4th generation iPod Nano
The biggest news at the annual iPod event lived up to the rumors and leaked spy photos leading up to the event, with the launch of the new 4th generation iPod Nano that has taken a step back to a design more similar to the 2nd gen iPod Nano, but with a larger screen and the Apple accelerometer technology allowing you to turn the new iPod Nano on the side to watch videos in widescreen format, something that was lacking in the 3rd generation iPod Nano. But the 4th gen iPod Nano got more than just a design lift, it also got a memory upgrade to 16gb and new functionality, including the shake n play for random song. The iPod Nano now also comes in 9 different colors, including orange, red and pink. The iPod Nano has also gone down slightly in price, and you can compare and find best price on 4th gen iPod Nano 8gb and 16gb here.
The new 120gb iPod Classic
The iPod Classic had not received much attention prior to the iPod conference, and as it turned out it would not take the center stage either, as what we got was a brand new, slightly thinner, and slightly enhanced 120gb iPod Classic that will replace the current 80gb and 160gb iPod Classic. But if you are enjoying your iPod Classic you might want to check out the attractive price of the 120gb iPod Classic.
New iTunes 8
The rumors about the new iTunes 8 software came up strong on the outside in the week leading up to the launch, especially with the rumor of the new Genius playlist feature that was expected, and delivered, with the new iTunes 8 upgrade. The Genius functionality basically makes iTunes suggest a playlist for you based on just one song, using sophisticated information to compare other similar artists and songs that you might want to listen to. The new iTunes 8 also comes with enhanced viewing capabilities and integration of functionality over to the iTunes store, so well worth upgrading to. If you are running Windows Vista, please be aware that there are rumors about possible issues with the new iTunes 8 causing blue screen errors every now and then.
As we are sure that Apple will not rest to long on their laurels we will continue to monitor the rumor mill around our favourite media players and bring you the latest and breaking news on the iPod.
