Third party web browsers comes to iPhone and iPod Touch

Some would say that it was just a matter of time before Apple would have to open up their iPhone and iPod Touch to competitor applications, such as other web browsers than the Safari browser that comes with the iPhone and iPod Touch. Well the wait seems to be over as reports are coming in that third party browsers such as the free Edge browser and WebMate tabbed browser are now available from the iTunes App Store.

MacRumours were among the first to release the news that Apple had started accepting third party web browser applications, that could potentially have been sitting in their own special queue for months while waiting for Apple to make a decision on whether or not to approve them.

This could very well be a sign of increased competiton from the likes of Google Android and other mobile operators starting to open up for opensource mobile applications. Or perhaps Apple has just realized that they can make even more money by allowing these third party applications to be available for the users.

At the moment the web browsers that are available are smaller ones, such as the free Edge browser, the Incognito, the WebMate, and the Shaking Web - all available to download from the iTunes App Store.

This could be the first small step towards Apple opening the doors for more prominent web browsers to gain access to the iPhone and the iPod Touch, including well known mobile web browser operators such as Opera and Firefox. We will keep following the developments in this area closely.
