Sony has a wide range of headphones on offer and one of the more popular ones are the MDRXB500 Extra Bass headphones, much thanks to their affordable price point.

At first look i thought the Sony MDRXB500 would be priced higher than what they are. They look and feel fairly solid with their king-size earpads, although i personally find them a bit too soft and they made my ears a bit sweaty after long use. On a positive note they feel light and you get good support from the broad over-the-head band that is of course adjustable. The size of the earpads is also there to help improve sound isolation, and it worked to a certain degree.
With the size of the MDRXB500 headphone Sony have been able to get a large 40mm driver unit in them providing improved low-frequencies. The frequenzy response rate is said to be between 4Hz to 24,000Hz. The large driver unit is also the secret behind the ‘extra bass’ featured in these headphones.
My first impression when it comes to the sound from the Sony MDRXB500 headphones is that they are average for their price range. I felt that the sound picture was a bit flat and lacked detail at lower volume, whilst when you crank them up they get a bit sharp around the edges.
