iPhone OS 3.1 new features
By admin • Sep 10th, 2009 • Category: iPhoneApple has just released the new iPhone OS 3.1 firmware upgrade, which is a free upgrade for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch, bringing some improvements and new features to both devices, including genius recommendations for applications and download ringtones.

We have taken a closer look at some of the new features that you can download through iTunes today and upgrade your iPhone or iPod Touch with. Some of these features are also useful with the new iTunes 9 that was launched at the same event, such as the application management interface now found on iTunes that easily allows you to organize the apps on your iPhone or iPod Touch before syncing.
Genius recommendations for apps
This is a feature that many people have been asking for, and that frankly Apple had to deliver in this upgrade. The Genius recommendations will basically sugggest other apps you might be interested in based on your previous purchases and downloads. It can sometimes be difficult to navigate your way around the app store and the thousands upon thousands of apps, so this feature will definitely come in handy.
Genius Mixes
This is a feature that allows iTunes to automatically create mixes of music for you based on the music that is already in your iTunes library. This is a great little extra feature to as an alternativ to playing random songs or using the normal Genius playlist generator.
Download ringtones
I have to admit that as long as there is a free way to get ringtones on your iPhone, this is a feature that i will not be using much, but for those that can’t be asked to do that little extra work, this is a quick way to customize ringtones for the different people in your contact list, and you can choose between thousands of the latest hits and classics.
Other features and updates
In addition to the above, the new iPhone OS 3.1 firmware includes upgrades and features such as:
- Improved syncing for all file types
- iTunes U content organization
- Redeeming iTunes gift cards
- Display of available credits in iTunes Store and App Store
- Ability to save videos from mail or MMS into camera roll

- Using MobileMe to remotely lock iPhone with a passcode
- Voice control for iPhone 3GS with bluetooth headsets
- Cut and paste phone numbers
- anti-phisning functionality in Safari
- Imporoved Exchange calendar
