Apple calls the iPhone 5 the ‘biggest thing to happen to the iPhone since iPhone’ and in most senses of the statement it is correct, as the iPhone 5 does bring more to the table than any other iPhone to date, and that includes a 4-inch retina display that looks very sharp.
iPhone 5 design and features
The basic elements of the design is similar to the iPhone 4S, but several improvements have been made, both to actual design to accommodate the 4-inch screen, but also to the material of which the iPhone 5 is made with. Because Apple has not only made the iPhone 5 bigger in term of screen size, they have also made it thinner and lighter, a feat that meant a redesign of pretty much every element of the phone.
A mere 7.6 mm thick, this is the thinnest iPhone to date. To be able to do this Apple changed over to a new Nano Sim card, and changed the old 30-pin connector to the new Ligtning connector, that is not just much smaller but also reversible. It has saved them a lot of space, but also created quite a headache for a lot of accessory providers (and customers with a wide range of accessories already, escpecially speaker docks). Other features like the new A6 chip, the battery, the new 8MP iSight camera, has resulted in Apple making an iPhone 5 that is 20% lighter than its predecessor.
Reports indicate that the iPhone 5 design is so complex that it is the most difficult production unit the assemblers have ever had to deal with, which could also be the cause of some supply issues of units in the first few months of sales.
With the new A6 chip and improved battery, Apple claims to have made the iPhone 5 up to twice as fast, while extending the battery life to 8 hours 3G browsing, 8 hours talk time, and 10 hours video playback.
Apple could already boast to have one of the better smartphone cameras around on the iPhone 4S, and with the new iSight camera on the iPhone 5 they have taken it a step further. With the new 8MP camera at the back you can now take panorama photos with ease, record even better HD video, and the camera app is faster than ever. For facetime fans, you can now video call in HD as well.
There are also several improvements that have come through the release of iOS 6, including improved Siri voice assistant that now understands more questions and can post to Facebook for you as part of a wider Facebook integration from Apple. One area that iOS 6 have received a lot of flack is around the new Map apps. Apple has ditched Google Maps and replaced it with their own Map service, which unfortunately has had some issues, causing even Apple to go out and publicly apologize to their customers.
