iPhone 4 wins mobile phone of the year and talk of MWC 2011

The mobile phone industry has sieged Barcelona for the last week or so as the Mobile World Congress has been in town, and despite the absence of Apple, the iPhone 4 was voted as the mobile phone of the year.

To tell you the truth the MWC 2011 in Barcelona has been a showcase in what’s to come from Android smartphones and tablets, showcasing the latest handsets from producers including Samsung, LG, HTC, and many more. Despite some very interesting and high quality smartphones and tablets running Android coming throughout 2011, including the LG Optimus 3D and Samsung Galaxy S2, it was the Apple iPhone 4 that ended up being the talk of the town, snagging up the mobile phone of the year award.

It was the iPhone 4′s sharp screen, design, and app ecosystem that landed Apple the prize. Although we are sure the jury took into consideration the issues with the antenna on the iPhone 4, from a consumer point of view we can see why the iPhone 4 ended up being the winner.

Last year it was the HTC Hero that snagged up the mobile phone of the year award, perhaps then a bit surprisingly beating out the iPhone 3GS.

Other award winners at the MWC 2011 include:

  • Angry Birds winning Apple app of the year and the coveted App of the Year
  • Google Maps winning Android app of the year
  •  HTC winning device manufacturer of the year
