iPad 2 goes big on first weekend – 500,000 expected sold

The new Apple iPad 2 went on sale in the US this weekend just passed, and it looks like it has been another roaring success for Apple as early reports indicate that most stores have sold out, estimating around 500,000 units sold in the first weekend.

The iPad 2 first weekend sales estimates are calculated by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, and is based on information they have gathered from talking with key retailers Apple, Target and Best Buy, who are all reporting selling out on the iPad 2 over the weekend.

It is even reported that preorders through the Apple website is reporting up to a month delivery time, an indication that once again demand is higher than early supplies for Apple.

There were questions before the initial weekend whether or not Apple had delivered enough from the 2nd generation iPad to make people switch, but so far indications are that it might be largely new iPad owners that have generated the majority of the early demand.

As Europe and other countries prepare for the release of the iPad 2 on Friday 25th March, lets hope there are stock levels to cover off the expected early demand in key countries such as the UK. There are no reports as of yet that Apple production has been hit by the Japan earthquake and tsunami.
