iOS 7: Which devices will support it, and possible feature limitations

Those of you living in Apple world will probably have read a gazillion articles on iOS 7 and its features already, so I will save you reading another, and instead focusing on giving some other relevant information with regards to the new iOS 7; namely device support and feature limitations.

Apple iOS 7 features

While iOS 7 is still in beta, there has been plenty of early reviews from users with beta access, and the Apple camp seems fairly split on the new look and features. For us regular users, we have to wait until later this fall before we can get our hands on iOS 7, and as usual that access is dependent on what iOS device you own.

Apple devices supporting iOS 7

These are the current devices said to support iOS 7 and some or all of its features.

iPad

  • iPad 4
  • iPad Mini
  • iPad 3 aka original Retina iPad
  • iPad 2

iPhone

iPod Touch

It comes as no surprise that earlier versions of any of these devices will not support the latest iOS, with many of them not supporting the current iOS 6 either. Should you be the owner of the original iPad or perhaps an iPhone 3GS, it might be time to consider an upgrade. You can always pop into an Apple store or local Apple retailer and test out a device running iOS 7 when it becomes available to see if you like it.

Wait… there might still be feature limitations

Even if your device is technically capable of running iOS 7 (like the iPhone 4), you might not get it in all its glory. Here are some of the known features that will not be supported by all devices running iOS 7.

Airdrop

Airdrop is one of the brand new features in iOS 7 that allows for easier filesharing between iOS devices. However, this is one of the features that will not work across all devices supporting iOS 7. The devices that at the moment is excluded from getting Airdrop are:

  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 4S
  • 3rd generation iPad
  • iPad 2

Siri

Siri has been around the block for a couple of years by now, so it is not exactly a new feature, but “she” will be getting more voice options, including a choice between male and female voice (depending on location). As with previous versions of iOS, Siri is not included for the following devices:

  • iPhone 4
  • iPad 2

Swipe and panoramic photos

This feature is only available for the following iOS 7 devices:

  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 5
  • iPod Touch 5

Live camera filters and filters in photo app

As for the live camera filters, these will only be available for the iPhone 5 and the 5th generation iPod Touch (not for iPhone 4S funnily enough). As for the filters in the photo app, these are available for all iOS 7 devices with the exception of the iPad 2.

Now as we all know, iOS 7 is currently in beta, so features and compatibilities may change before the actual release date this fall, so it is worth to keep checking back for further updates.

If you know of any other “limitations” any of the devices may have when it comes to iOS 7, we appreciate your heads-up so we can keep this story as current and informed as possible.
