It seems no one does product placements in movies and on television quite like Apple does it as the Brandchannel is reporting that Apple products appeared in 30% of the films that were number 1 at the box office in the US during 2010.
In fact Apple products have appeared in more than one-third of all number one films at the US box office since 2001, and has been in more top films over the last decade than McDonalds and Nike combined, which is an incredible feat. However, it looks like in the last year Apple has been on a downward slope in percentage product placements (see graph), and that is despite the launch of the Apple iPad and the new iPhone 4.
Speaking of the Apple iPad, the original iPad (not the new iPad 2) got some serious early exposure when it was launched as the hit ABC show ‘Modern Family’ (love that show by the way) devoted an entire half hour episode to the Apple iPad. The producer has later admitted that they probably took it a bit far, but was hoping that it would land everyone on the crew with an iPad freebie from Apple (did not happen).
Here is a selection of other top films and tv series that have had prominent Apple placements in the last year or so:
- Get him to the Greek
- Sex and the city 2
- Dinner for Schmucks
- Morning Glory
- Toy Story 3
- Twilight: Eclipse
- The Office
- 30 Rock
- The Colbert Show
- Going the distance
- Book of Eli
- Gullivers Travels (was product placement crazy)
- Hurt locker
MarketingWeek is also reporting that the practice of product placements is likely to become more the norm in the UK as well following it becoming allowed from the 28th February across TV series, sports programmes, films and entertainment shows.
