After months of speculations and rumours, it’s official. Apple today announced and showcased to the world the new iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch screen and its big brother, the iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5-inch screen. Gone are the days when Apple believed phablets would never become popular.
The larger screen options comes as no surprise to anyone remotely interested in Apple products, and as expected, the iPhone 6 also comes with a myriad of other improved features. Apple has amongst other been able to make the iPhone 6 even slimmer than previous models, now measuring a mere 6.8mm (iPhone 6) and 7.1mm (iPhone 6 Plus).
Gone is also the ‘square’ edges, replaced with a more rounded form that brings a fluid transition between the glass and the metal body. It all looks very sleek. While we did not see the sapphire glass as earlier rumoured, we get an ion-enforced glass that is more scratch and shatter proof than the old glass.
Apple has also improved the screen experience, bringing in Retina HD with a resolution of 1334×750 for the iPhone 6 and 1920×1080 for the iPhone 6 Plus. To power this experience they have also upgraded the internals to A8 processor that is reported to be 25% faster than the iPhone 5S chip, and they have improved the GPU to be 50% better than the current model. Combine the performance with the new screen, and it should make for a great experience.
The camera remains an 8 megapixel sensor, but Apple has improved its performance by adding a new sensor for Focus Pixels, and new video features such as 1080P HD at 60fps, time-lapse mode, and slo-mo at 240fps.
Alongside the Apple Touch iD function now comes Apple Pay, their mobile payment solution, and finally NFC technology for the iPhone. This new feature is said to bring more secure and easy payments using only your iPhone as your wallet.
Both models will of course run the new iOS 8 that will be made available to the public on the 17th September, with the iPhone 6 Plus larger screen enjoying some additional features from iOS 8 that is more like what you find for the iPad.
Other new features include:
- Support for new wireless 802.11ac standard for up 3 times faster web page load speeds
- Improved battery life/operating time
- Motion recognition, allowing the iPhone to know if you are walking, cycling, standing still etc.
