The iPod now also influencing Olympic athletics
By admin • Jul 27th, 2008 • Category: Apple iPod, iPodThe Scotsman had an interesting article today about the iPod getting on the wrong side of the Olympics, with the Scottish Athletics governing body introducing new list of “Track Etiquette”.
New track etiquette and health and safety code includes guidelines for using digital music systems, like the Apple iPod, describing them as potentially dangerous and causing collisions. This follows earlier news about several large marathon races considering banning the use of digital music players as they could cause unecessary accidents.
The new guidelines which have to be followed by all athletes includes the wording; “Don’t use headphones or mobile phone on the track or infield.” The argument is that one need to be able to hear the warnings from other athletes or announcement while on the track or infield.
Several athletes and campaigner against political correctness has come out to say that this is just another example of the nanny politics by the governing bodies and that athletes must be trusted to apply commonsense and make decisions on this themselves. We fully agree with that standpoint.
