Azatom iWood 4 speaker dock [review]

Azatom iWood 4 speaker dock

Azatom might be a fairly new brand in the iPod speaker dock market, but based on their systems you would not think so as they are poised to bring the challenge to the established brands, including with this new Azatom iWood 4 speaker dock.

Azatom iWood 4 speaker dockAzatom is already delivering one of the most popular budget speaker docks in the Azatom iFlute, and one of the speaker docks I have had the pleasure to test in the monster that is the Azatom iBigboy 2. With the new iWood 4 however they are targeting the mid-range market home speaker dock market, while still focusing on delivering strong value for money and a powerful sound experience.

At first look the Azatom iWood 4 might not stand out in the same way as the Zeppelin’s of the speaker dock world, but I have found that the design has grown on me over the last couple of weeks, and it actually fits in well with my living room. The body of the speaker is made out of wood, finished with a gloss black cover , giving it a high quality feel and build quality. According to the manufacturer, the iWood 4 shape is so that it improves the air flow for enhanced sound and bass reproduction. The docking station itself is placed at the top of the unit, together with touch controls for volume, input, and stand by. At the front, between the drivers, the lcd screen displays information about what you are listening to.

Feature wise the iWood 4 comes with 120W of max power output across dual 13cm cross over mid-range carbon fiber drivers, dual 2.5cm silk tweeters, and dual fast flow bass ports at the back of the unit. The docking station supports iPhone and iPod docking, but due to its cradled docking port you will not be able to dock an iPad with the system, hence you can get it with a bluetooth adapter for wireless streaming. They have also packed in AUX input and S-video out, allowing you to connect it to your television for watching video/photos from your iPhone/iPod.

In the sound department, the iWood 4 punches at least a class above its weight, as the power of this system is backed up by clear vocals, punchy and deep bass, and overall a well balanced sound that you normally would have to pay double this price for. Half the power of this system is more than enough for home use, but crank it up and you might have the neighbours banging on your door. An extra plus goes out to this unit as well due to its performance across different volumes, as it handles both low and high volumes without too much difference in audio experience. Depending on what you listen to it could be a good idea to use the bass/treble adjustments to find the right balance for improved performance.

Overall the Azatom iWood 4 is amongst the best speaker docks I have tested at its price class, with impressive power and audio performance. If there is anything negative to say about it at this price, it would have to be the lack of iPad docking support and perhaps lack of radio feature.
