Another delay for the rumored Apple Tablet – this time its OLED screen

Update! Apple yesterday officially launched the Apple iPad, without OLED screen and missing some other important features as well.

The latest rumour around the rumored Apple Tablet (that is a lot of rumors!) are that there will be another delay in this gadget hitting the markets as Apple wants to use OLED screens for their new device.

This latest Apple Tablet rumor comes courtesy of DigiTimes that have impressed with their failed predictions many times before, so it is probably worth taking this with a pinch of salt. According to their manufacturer sources there is likely to be 2 different models of the Apple Tablet, a 9.7inch and a 10.6 inch, both featuring OLED screens.

What does makes sense is for the Apple Tablet to receive OLED screens, as they deliver a better quality picture and is more energy efficient, something that should be a key challenge for Apple for the Tablet, just as it is for the iPod Touch and the iPhone. However, OLED screens are still quite expensive, with costs of a 9.7 inch OLED screen coming in at around $500 (£300), which would likely push the price of the Apple Tablet to somewhere around $1500 (£900), a hefty price that could bring you a good substitute product instead.

There is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Apple Tablet, including what it will be called and when it will hit the market. I can understand that Apple is being careful in their approach to make sure they get it right as competition is tough in the netbook and similar market, and it is important for Apple to get their strategy right so not to cannibalize their other products, including the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch 3G.

We will come back with more around this as the sources become more credible.
