Around the same time as Denon announced their CEOL RCD-N7 AirPlay enabled network music system Marantz also announced their version in the Melody Media M-CR603, also with AirPlay compatibility, giving us another option for a great mini Hi-Fi network music system.
Design, features & sound
With the Marantz Melody Media M-CR603 network music system they have delivered a stylish little box that is packed with some great features, allowing you to pair it up with your favourite speakers for a true home sound system, although limited to 2-channels.
The M-CR603 is available in black, gold, silver, and a silver/gold version, all looking very stylish, professional and accomplished as a small network music system unit - a control hub for your music enjoyment at home so to speak. There is no docking station on this unit, but the front USB port is iPod digital compatible and works with iPhone certified if you need to connect with wires, as this system is about being wireless.
Simply connect the Melody Media M-CR603 to your home network through the ethernet cable at the back of the system and you can enjoy your entire network shared music library, as well as internet radio and services like Napster and Last.fm. There is also DAB radio for those that want that, but the jewel is the AirPlay functionality that can be unlocked with a software upgrade (€49 – more information here), opening up for easy streaming of music from your iOS device or iTunes on your computer. There is also an option to add a bluetooth receiver at the back of the unit for even further streaming capabilities in case your music player is not AirPlay enabled.
The Melody Media M-CR603 offers a powerful 60W RMS per channel (two channels) and combined with the right speakers you can unleash the true potential of this as a home sound system. Having spent a limited time listening to it i can still say that the first impression of the sound was beyond most speaker docks i have listened to.
