Apple has just made it official, the 7.9-inch iPad Mini has been announced featuring a 1024 x 768 display, measuring a mere 7.1mm thick and weighing only 308 grams. It will be available in Wi-Fi only as well as LTE versions, with prices starting at £269. Pre-ordering for wi-fi only version starts on Oct 26th.
iPad Mini features
Feature wise the iPad Mini is pretty much as expected, from the 7.9-inch screen with a 1024 x 768 resolution to the A5 processor inside. Basically, this is pretty much a smaller version of the iPad 2. The screen is not a Retina display, but the same pixel density as the iPad 2. This means that all the apps made for iPad will run smoothly on the new iPad Mini as well, a very important feature. The iPad Mini comes with the new Lightning Connector that Apple first introduced in the iPhone 5.
As for the camera, Apple has included a 5MP iSight camera at the back of the iPad Mini as well as Facetime camera to the front that allows you to make video calls in HD quality.
Besides the much smaller size, Apple are reporting that battery life on the new iPad Mini is at 10 hours. This of course depends on how you use it etc.
No new Apple product is complete without some cool accessories, so Apple has designed a new smartcover for the iPad Mini, that i have to say looks very nice. It is also reported that Apple is ready to start announcing more accessories based on the new Lightning Connector, including HDMI out, USB out, and SD card reader.
Price & availability
As expected, the iPad Mini won’t beat the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire on price, as the starting point is the 16GB Wi-Fi only version priced at £269. After that it goes up to £349 for the 32GB and £429 for the 64GB version (all wifi only). As for the LTE version, it will be starting at £369, going up to £449 and £529.
Pre-ordering starts on October 26th, with shipping dates for the Wi-Fi only versions around 22nd November and the LTE version a couple of weeks later. So there is time to get yours before Christmas, but i would expect demand to be high so get in there early! We will have to wait and see if they are able to get the LTE versions out to people before Christmas.

Final iPad Mini thoughts…
There is no doubt that Apple has pulled another big one out of the bag and i expect demand to be very high over the coming weeks/months. The iPad Mini has the early ‘drool’ factor that is likely to open up some wallets around the country, especially from the Apple fans, and there are many of them out there these days. It will however be interesting to see the hands-on reports over the coming days, the comparisons with the Nexus 7 and the likes, have Apple got the pricing right for the iPad Mini.
